Since I am using a monochrome camera (black & white), I use specific filters between the telescope and camera sensor. I use Red, Green and Blue filters to capture and produce an image similar to what the human eye can see, like a normal camera. The other filters I use are Ha (Hydrogen Alpha), OIII (Oxygen III) and, SII (Sulfur II). So if I am taking a normal colored picture I need to take 3 separate exposures. An RGB image uses the 3 coloured filters, Red, Green and, Blue. When I am taking narrow band images using SHO (the Hubble pallet), I use the SII, Ha, and OIII filters. This combination produces enhanced coloured pictures similar to what you've seen from the Hubble Telescope. There are other variations of images using these filters in different combinations. One combination I often use is HOO, not all deep space objects emit SII light. In producing a coloured image, I use Photoshop where I combine the individual images to produce a coloured picture. If it's a standard image I just make Red as Red, Green as Green, and Blue as Blue. If it's a SHO image, I make SII as Red, Ha as Green, and OIII as Blue. A HOO images is Ha as Red, and OIII as Green and Blue. There are other combinations as well.

The reason for using SHO narrow-band filters is to eliminate light pollution in the sky. With the SII, Ha, and OIII gas emissions being so faint they need much longer exposures to become visible. Taking an average RGB image I take a 120-second exposure, and with SHO narrow-band images I take 300-second exposures. The better the filter the better the final picture. Some of the filters I started with produced halos around bright stars, and also allowing unwanted light through than they should, so you end up with a less sharp image. I ended up replacing two filters, the Ha, and OIII. I was getting coloured halos around my stars, which takes allot of time to control in processing.

 And Now To The Pictures

IC5070 "The Pelican Nebula" Captured Oct. 2021 using SHO filters.

IC410 "Tadpole Nebula"

This image was captured late Dec. 2021. 11 years of using a Losmandy G11 EQ mount it was time for a
change. The
Losmandy is a very stable and reliable mount for
astrophotography and many
imagers use them. For me, it just became my weakest part of my
system
especially after upgrading my imaging camera to the 20MP ZWO
ASI183mm Pro. The
Losmandy had intermittent times of great guiding at .30 arc
sec., but other
times it could be over 1.5 arc sec. I did all I could to tweak
the mount with
better worm gears and bearings but I just wanted something I
didn't need to
fiddle with.

<p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: "Calibri", "sans-serif"; font-size: 11pt; line-height: 115%; margin: 0in 0in 10pt;"><span face=""Arial","sans-serif"">
So
in the summer of 2021, I decided to do more research and track
down a new mount
within my limited budget. I wanted a mount with payload
capabilities similar
to my G-11 even though I'm using a 20lb imaging train. I am
always wanting
a larger scope. The summer of 2021 wasn't the best time to
look for
something new, with covid 19 still affecting supply chains for
anything
astronomy related. If I found a mount I was interested in,
could I
actually get my hands on it? My dream mount was the Italian
made
10micron <span face=""Arial","sans-serif"" style="font-style: normal;">GM1000HPS,
but at $13.000+ that was out of
the question.

<p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: "Calibri", "sans-serif"; font-size: 11pt; line-height: 115%; margin: 0in 0in 10pt; text-indent: 0.5in;"><span face=""Arial","sans-serif"" style="font-style: normal;">I
started researching the Sky
Watcher EQ-8. At around $5000.00 it looked promising. The
reviews seemed
good with the exception of USB port flaws, but I figured I
could work around
them. Now I had to find one. I scoured the internet with no
luck. Talking
to a few Canadian dealers, they told me that they didn't
expect any new stock until
summer 2022. The 3rd mount on my list was the iOptron CEM
70. It had
favorable reviews and was in my price range. The CEM 70 had
a lot of great
features I wanted. One thing I didn't need was a tripod,
with the
mount sitting in an observatory on a permanent pier. So back
to
searching online. Behold, I found one, the CEM 70G, with no
tripod. It was in stock and ready for immediate shipping.
The G version of
this mount has its own built-in polar alignment scope and
guide scope with
camera. One day later I received my packages from Ontario
Telescope: The mount, with its own carrying case, the
counter weight, and
the pier extension kit, as recommended by the owner Steve.

<p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: "Calibri", "sans-serif"; font-size: 11pt; line-height: 115%; margin: 0in 0in 10pt; text-indent: 0.5in;"><span face=""Arial","sans-serif"" style="font-style: normal;">Installing
the mount on the
existing pier was quite simple with a part from the pier
extension kit. I
had to drill a few holes and it was good to go. All I had to
do now was to
polar align the mount. The CEM 70G has a built-in polar
alignment scope
and camera, but it needed to be calibrated before use
according to the
manual. Since I already had a QHY Pole master alignment
camera, I decided
to go with it since it didn't need calibrating and I was
familiar with its use
and accuracy. The CEM 70G has a payload of 70lbs, so my 20lb
imaging system is
nothing for it. The feature I like most about this mount is
its internal
cabling system and built-in USB-3 hub. No more dangling
wires. I plug
in 1 USB and 12v power cable to the base of the mount and
there are connectors
at the base of the telescope. Nice and neat and no wire
snags.

<p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: "Calibri", "sans-serif"; font-size: 11pt; line-height: 115%; margin: 0in 0in 10pt; text-indent: 0.5in;"><span face=""Arial","sans-serif"" style="font-style: normal;">After
the mount was polar aligned
it was ready to go. I did a 2 star alignment then slewed to
my first
object, M57. It was dead centre, perfect. To this date I
haven't needed to
do another star alignment. The auto guiding on this mount
has been exceptional
for me, .25 - .65 arc sec. I've seen a great improvement in
my images, with
smaller and rounder stars. For the first month of using this
mount, I used the hand controller. With the built in GPS
system, it automatically calculated
the proper time and location. All the functions of the mount
were at my
fingertips. But, after about 2 months, the hand controller
lost its
brains. Its internal battery had failed. The tech department
at iOptron
responded to my email within a few hours with a PDF on how
to replace it. After
doing so, the hand controller worked well again.

<span face=""Arial","sans-serif"" style="font-style: normal;">Recently I
decided to change how I operate the mount. Everything is now computer controlled and operated from my
PC in the
observatory or from the house. This opens up many
possibilities, like automatically
running a full night of imaging while I'm sleeping. I
haven't tried this yet because
I still like being out in the Observatory keeping an eye on
things.<span face=""Arial","sans-serif"">

<span face=""Arial","sans-serif"" style="font-style: normal;">
Overall
I highly recommend this mount. I've been using the CEM70G in
my observatory for
16 months. It does what its supposed to do very
well. Hopefully one day,
I'll be able to test it with a much heavier telescope.<span face=""Arial","sans-serif"">

<span face=""Arial","sans-serif"" style="font-style: normal;">P.S.
Even though I have many opinions on the
equipment I own, this is my first actual written review. I
hope to have
more in the future. (All of these opinions and comments are
my own)<span face=""Arial","sans-serif"">
I decided to upgrade my imaging camera from a 2mp. ZWO ASI290MM Cool to the 20mp. ZWO ASI183MM-Pro. What a difference 18mp. can make. Now I am able to capture wider field images which gives me the opportunity to image larger objects. My 290 was a great starter mono camera which was easy to use and was great for learning R.G.B monochrome processing. This new 183 camera has 2.4 micron pixels which are smaller than the 2.9 of the older 290. This still makes it suitable for lunar, solar, and planitary as well as deepsky imaging.

The New Camera along with its Specs.

The Images below were captured from my BackYard Observatory in Sherkston On. I am happy with the results of my work. All these Galaxy images where captured with my ZWO ASI290MM Cooled camera. It was attached to a Tele Vue NP101 f5.4 APO refractor. My mount is a Losmandy G11 with Gemini 1 Goto controller. I use a ZWO EAF running the Moonlite focuser and a ZWO 8 position EFW.

All the images where aquired with Sharpcap. Deep Sky Stacker was used for image calibration and stacking. Photoshop CC2021 was used in image processing.

On average I captured these images the same way. Taking 120 to 180sec. frames in Red, Green, and Blue with a gain of 120 to 300. I would capture 20 frames of each colour, along with Darks and Flats.

Here are my results.

<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; I spent most of my time imaging the planets. Capturing them in RGB had a bit of a learning curve, in capturing techniques and processing. Basically 3 times the work. There are plenty of great tutorials on line to help as well as great free software. I used many programs, Firecapture for Image capture and filter control, PIPP for image stabilization, Autostakkert for Video stacking, RegiStax 6 for Wavelet sharpening, and Photoshop CC 2020 for final processing. All images where captured using a ZWOASI290mmc camera on a Tele Vue NP101 telescope. For the planets I used an Antaries 3x barlow.

Mars

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; My New Toy

Early this summer I was out imaging with my usual setup, Canon T3i on a Tele Vue NP101. When my first image appeared on my monitor of M8, and M20 I was uninspired. It was a great image of one of my favorite objects, but it looked the same as last year and the year before. I gathered about 20 frames and the next day I processed them into a nice Image. Over the past 7 years my imaging and processing skills have greatly improved to the point I can easily get good results. Don't get me wrong there is always room for improvement, I just think I was getting board with wide field imaging. I decided to change tactics and go after smaller objects like galaxies and planetary nebula. Looking online I came across an interesting and discounted and discontinued camera. This ZWO ASI290MM Cooled camera seem to fit the bill, a small monochrome CCD sensor with small pixels, and cooled. Once you decide to get a Monochrome camera your gonna need to spend more money on filters, and a filter wheel. I chose the ZWO motorized 5 position filter wheel, and found used LRGB, and SHO filters on Canadian Astro Buy Sell. That saved me quite a bit.

Since it is a monochrome camera, filters are required to produce a
colour image. A regular colour image uses LRGB filters. L= luminance,
R=Red, G=Green, B=Blue. To produce a colour image, multiple exposures
threw each filter is required then combined in processing. These below
images where produced using separate LRGB frames processed in Photoshop
CC 2020. They are my first attempts and there is plenty of room for imment. Using another set of filters, more dramatic results can be Produced. SHO, also known as the Hubble Palate. SII=Sulphure, Ha=Hydrogen, and OIII=Oxygen. Capturing the images is done using the same technique but, the final processing is a bit different. You combine the colours differently. The SII becomes Red, Ha becomes Green, and the OIII becomes Blue. These Images below are done in this method. Again they are a work in progress.

The Moon's Terminator is the line between day and night. In this region, because of the sharp shadows, you can see clearly how deep, and how high the moons creators are.

This image was captured during the moons first quarter. I used a Celestron Neximage5 camera mounted on a Tele Vue NP101. The camera resolution was at 1920x1080 @ 1/240 sec. and I captured a 4000 frame uncompressed AVI of each half. Each half was stacked separately using RegiStax 6.1. only 10% of the frames where used. After using wavelets to enhance detail, the 2 images where combined into a mosaic then processed into the final image using Photoshop.

The end of 2018

Well it"s hard to believe 2018 is coming to an end. The past few months haven't been favorable for astrophotography at all. Its been cloudy and rainy. I missed all the fall targets I was hoping to capture. Maybe next year.

In October I did manage a pair of objects new to me, the Fireworks Galaxy along with an open cluster NGC6939. I was quite happy with my results. It was published in our clubs 2019 calendar.

This image was captured with my Tele Vue NP101 and a Ha modified Canon T3i. The processing this time was done a bit different. The 20 frames where converted from the CR2 RAW file to a TIFF using Canon's Digital Photo Pro 4 software. Than stacking the TIFF files using DSS (Deep Sky Stacker) Using DPP4 seems to reduce background noise in the image. The stacked image was then processed in Photoshop CC.

In early December we had a few clear nights where I was able to capture Comet 46P Wirtanen. It is a fast moving that passed close to earth in mid December with a brightness of magnitude peaking at +3.8.

With the Comet traveling at a fast speed, and direction compared to the stars, a faster shutter speed is required to keep both from streaking. This is a single 90 second exposure @ 3200iso. The Comet has a blue green colour from gasses and ice being expelled from its surface by the heat of the suns warm solar winds. Unfortunately they weren't strong enough to create a visible tale.

With the Telescope tracking the Comet instead of the stars, I captured 3, 300sec. exposures. Stacking the images the stars become streaks. This makes it easy to see how fast the Comet

moved in 15 min.

When the skies clear and the brightness of the moon fades, I hope to capture images of the Comet heading away from us.

A Planetary Summer

Hello everyone. I can't believe summer is over already. I spent alot of the summer struggling with tracking issues with my Losmandy G11 mount. Deep-sky imaging was a struggle therefor I didn't capture anything usable. I finally after much research on line I speculated it could be a bad bearing. So I recruited My cousin (who rebuilds classic cars) to order the best quality bearings he could find. A total of 7. Long story short, What a difference it made. Now I'm ready for the Fall and Winter imaging season. Anyway, since deep-sky imaging was out of the question, I turned my telescope and camera on the planets. I started with Jupiter, then Saturn, than finished with Mars. With Mars being closer than it has been since 2003 I was hoping for great results. Well, as in 2003, Mars decides to kick up a planet wide dust storm. My first few attempts just looked like an orange ball. I did manage to get a few fair images a few weeks past opposition.

All the planetary images I captured , there done using the same method, and the same equipment.

Tele Vue NP101 4" f5.4 APO Refractor.

Tele Vue 3X Barlow

Celestron NexImage 5 camera

Celestron iCap 2.4 for camera controll

RegiStax 6.1, and Photoshop CC for image processing

I captured AVI's of 6000 frames. using the highest shutter speed as possible and frame rate of 50 fps. Also keeping the gain low to eliminate noise.

Some of my Jupiter images. I am quite happy with them. On average I was able to get a shutter speed of 1/70th of a second with a gain of 45 @ 50 fps. The camera resolution was @ 640x480
This was the best image of Saturn I could get. Using only a 4" telescope, limits the light I can gather. On average the shutter speed was 1/15th sec. and the gain was 60. I need a larger scope to get better results. This is still my best Saturn image.

I was hoping for better images of Mars, but the dust storms did have an effect. I was able to get a shutter speed of 1/120th sec. with the gain down to 20.

Overall I think it was a successful summer season. I managed to get some reasonable planetary pictures. My mount is finally been repaired and ready for Deep Sky imaging, and after 7 years I have a new, speedy PC with a 500Gb SSD with a high end video card for running Photoshop CC. It took allot of research to conclude what it takes to get the best performance out of Photoshop, but it was worth it. This will make my image processing way faster and more enjoyable. If your interested in finding more info on what computer I purchased, just leave me a comment.

Till Next Time: Glen
Thanks
It is a great portable tracking mount. I decided to try it out by Imaging the Milky way. Using my modded Canon T3i with a 50mm f1.8 lens. The first image was taken from my backyard in Sherkston. The second was taken at Cherry Springs Pennsylvania.
I have been having issues with my ISP. I had next to no upload speed. They blamed my router, and I blamed there Modem. Well, the problem was on there end but not the Modem.
I will be posting images from July, August, and September. Unfortunately there will not be any Eclipse images from my trip to Idaho. I got so caught up in viewing the event, I forgot to remove the filters from my camera during totality. I could tell the camera wasn't taking proper exposures but decided it was more important to view the eclipse than fiddle with my camera. But Toni came threw. It was spectacular. I promise to have some images next time. On April 8th 2024, I will have over 3 minutes of totally right hear in my backyard in Sherkston.

This is a panoramic view of our eclipse site in the mountains, a few hours north of Boise Idaho. This great location was found by my Uncle Bill Kozar. We had about 2 minutes of spectacular totally.
Even tho I didn't get any images of Totally, My Wife Toni, using a hand held Canon XSi with a 50mm lens, managed to capture these images. I had to do a bit of image processing in PhotoShop CC, they don't look to shabby.

Looks like imaging Jupiter is over for the season. I did manage to get a few more attempts, Last Saturday I was hoping to capture a double moon transit, and the Great Red Spot. Well the clouds rolled in before that all happened, but I did capture two of its moons. I also seem to be getting better at capturing and processing planetary images as well.

ISS Transiting the Sun

This past summer I was told of a great website (ISS Transit Finder). Inputting your Lat. and Lon. it will calculate if and when the ISS will cross between you and the Sun, and Moon. So I punched my data and "bingo" there was going to be a pass, actually 2 passes came up, a week apart. I decided to try capturing this event. Well the weather wasn't good for the first pass, but I set up anyway. I set up my Lunt LS60-THa solar scope with a MallinCam Micro ex. What I needed to do is capture a video of the transit. The actual transit takes less than 1 second. in this case it was .54 sec. Even with the skies so poor I figured I would try a test run. I wasn't even sure how accurate this info was going to be. I had a few friends over to witness this event. Just as it was time for the transit the clouds thinned a bit. We didn't see a thing. But after playing back the video we did catch a glimpse of the ISS. Wow, this actually worked. The fallowing week the weather was perfect. I was already to go. I was sertup like the previous week with the Lunt solar scope. I started capturing the video and with in a second there it went.

I took the captured AVI video and used the 20 frames that showed the ISS transit. Using RegiStax this is what I was able to get. Next time I will speed up the frame rate of the camera to get a better image.

Well there is no excuse this time for not updating my blog, I just kept putting it off. Well here is whats new. In June I had some friends help to install a new pier for the Observatory. Pulled out the old pier and poured a new 10" concrete one. The previous pier had popped out of the ground from the deep frost of the winter of 2014/15. I also purchased a QHY PoleMaster, polar alignment camera. This tiny device is amazing. It enable me to get my polar alignment down to under .30 arc.min. With such a tight polar alignment I get smaller tighter stars and finer detail in my images.

Here are a few of the images I captured. All images where taken with a moded Canon XSi camera on a Tele Vue NP101 apo telescope. on a Losmandy G11 mount. All processing was done with Photo Shop CC. There were no Dark, Flat, or Bias frames taken.

It's Been A Long Time Coming

but we finally got some great clear skies. With the wind coming from the Southwest it helped with the transparency and thankfully didn't effect the imaging. My G11 was holding to scopes that night, my NP101, and my friends AP130. I used my modded Canon Xsi (450D) with an IDAS LPS-P2 filter controlled by Backyard EOS @1600iso. I captured 16 images of M42 using my Tele Vue NP101

For the past few weeks I have been doing some upgrades to my computer. I switched to Windows 10 from 7, and upgraded to Photoshop CC. These changes have greatly improved the speed of my computer and processing.
I had captured 16 images of M42. 4 x 5sec, 4 x 30sec, and 8 x 330sec. I didn't take any Darks, of Flats. The first thing I did was to open all 16 images into CC Camera Raw and adjusted the colour balance, vignetting, exposure, contrast, and blackness. I also did a quick crop to clean up the edges. The next step was to open all the images with Photoshop CC. Using Statistics, under scripts, I stacked all 16 images together. I have tried this before but never had results like this. I couldn't have asked for anything better, I was blown away. This was my first time using CC, and man was I impressed. The next steps where my normal processing techniques. I used "Color Mancers" Boundary Noise Reduction to clean up the noise. I highly recommend it, It is free, and I haven't seen anything better. When I look at this completed image, I have to say this is my best image yet.
In August I had Heart Valve replacement surgery. This has slowed me down a bit, but I have done some imaging. Once I get it processed I will post the pictures.

The good news is I was able to get some good images of last nights "Blood Moon, Super Moon" Eclipse. There where allot of clouds to battle, But I managed to capture totality. Thanks clouds for giving me a peek.
All images where captured using a Canon XSi on a Tele Vue NP101 f5.4 APO Refractor
